International Women’s Day 2020 Campaign Theme: #EachforEqual

International Women’s day was first celebrated in 1975 and in 1977, the United Nations General Assembly invited member states to proclaim the date to be the UN Day for women’s and world peace.

This year’s theme for International Women’s Day is ‘I am Generation Equality: Realising Women’s Rights.’ The theme is aligned with UN Women’s new multigenerational campaign, Generation Equality, which Mark’s the 25th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.

According to the UN, the Generation Equality campaign aims to bring together people of every gender, age, ethnicity, race, religion and country to facilitate awareness and create gender-equality around the world.

UN Women Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo Ngcuka highlighted the year for gender equality and called on everyone to tackle the persistent barriers against gender equality.

The core message of #EachforEqual, the campaign at the centre of this year, is to seek attention to the idea that gender inequality isn’t a women’s issue, but an economic one-as gender equality is essential for economies and communities to thrive.

The campaign says, that by celebrating women’s achievement, raising awareness of bias and calling out inequality, we can all help to bring about change.

HIGHLIGHTS OF CAMPAIGN

1. Empowering women through health education.
2. Forging inclusive workplaces so women thrive.
3. Championing women forging tech innovation
4. Applauding equality for women athletes.
5. Increasing visibility for female creatives.
6. Supporting women to earn on their own terms.

The year 2020 is a pivotal year for advancing gender equality worldwide, as the global community takes stock of progress made for women’s right since the adoption o f the Beijing Platform for Action.

Today, not a single country can claim to have achieved gender equality. Multiple obstacles remain unchanged in law and in culture. There is a significant threat of rollback of hard-won feminist gains.

The year 2020 represents an unmissable opportunity to mobilize global action to achieve gender equality and human rights of all women and girls.

The United Nation Observance of International Women’s Day 2020 will take place at the United Nations Secretariat in New York on Friday, 6th March 2020, from 10am to 1pm.

The event will celebrate change makers of all ages and genders and discuss how they can collectively tackle the unfinished business of empowering all women and girls in the years to come.

The Observance will include addresses by senior representatives of the United Nations System, an inter- generational dialogue with gender equality activists, and musical performances.
